As iPhone is set to hit shores of India on Aug 22,I was very exited as everybody else asking always one question "How much does the iPhone will cost in India?" and the answer to it is obtained officialy from Vodafone that iPhone 8GB: Rs.31,00 and iPhone 16GB:Rs.36,100
and people can book iPhone by paying an advance Rs.10,000 @ a near by Vodafone store.

The Story

I chose to take the challenge of making my bro's iPhone 2g phone with 1.1.2 firmwre to the latest 2.0.1 and ofcourseunlocked & jailbroen.
So a quick google took me to several iPhone modding communities where there were lot of such success stories. After reading many of them then i came to know that the task is not so difficult as it sounds..
So arrived at this conclusion that as i've a jailbroken & unlocked iPhone 2g with 1.2.2 there was no direct upgrade that was successful i.e from 1.1.2 to 2.0.1

I've to upgrade it to 1.1.4 and then to 2.0.1.The resons are:

  1. iPhones with firmware(f/w) upto 1.1.4 are unlcoked and jailbroke using iLiberty+ or ZiPhone. and
  2. iPhones with f/w 2.0 or more are unlocked & jailbroke using pwnage.
And both the methods are different from ground..
the first method is as easy as clicking a button "do it all fo me" and Hurray!! you have an iPhone unlocked & jailbroken ,while the second one is quite not so simple..it actually takes the original Apple 2.0 or later f/w and is modified using pwnage tools(Winpwn for Windows & Pwnage for OSX) and then fed to iPhone..so we are actually loading a customised f/w to iPhone.

The Adventure

Upgrading iPhone f/w from 1.1.2 to 2.0.1

The process was not very difficult as i've already told

Upgrading from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4

The process is actually three simple steps:
  1. Get the firmware required
  2. Restore your iPhone using iTunes to the downloaded f/w(You must keep iPhone in DFU mode and connect it to system)
  3. Use 3rd party tools like iLiberty+ or ZiPhone to Jailbreak & Unlock ur iPhone

A list of download links to iPhone f/w released till date
  1. Got the required iPhone 1.1.4 f/w here.
  2. I found a problem with iTunes 7.7 while restoring to 1.1.4( it failed at the preparing iPhone for restoration stage quite many times) so i downloaded an older iTunes7.6 version and installed it.
  3. Now setting the iPhone in DFU mode(before entering into this mode connect ur iPhone to system and have itunes open coz it helps to identify that u set it in DFU mode):
  4. Default Factoru Unit(DFU) mode is mode in which iPhone is put in factory before loading f/w.To put iPhone in DFU mode we have to press both the home screen & lock keys for 10 seconds and after 10 secs release the lock key while continuing to hold the home key..
You can notice that iPhone screens becomes blank and nothing happens..if u have iPhone connected to system then you can notice that Windows XP will start installing drivers for iPhone in DFU mode and iTunes saying that an iPhone in DFU mode found..
  5. Restoring iPhone to downloaded f/w(holding shift key while clicking restore will allow us to choose the ipsw file to be used for restoration)
  6. After restoration iPhone reboots and then it has to be activated.
  7. Now i used ZiPhone for activation and unlocking it.
Upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1

Here after downloading the 2.0.1 f.w and upgrading the iTunes to 7.7 i followed this guide and successfully upraded it to 2.0.1

All this process took an hou and at the end of the day i'm very satisfied to have completed task successfully..
hanks to modmyiphone, iclarified and several other modding sites for their detailed guides..and my humble thanks to the iphone-team for releasing such wonderfull pwnage tool to unlock 2.0 f/w and other developers of previous f/w version crackers.

But after two days of using iPhone on 2.0.1 i've noticed several freezes and crashes of iPhone which i never noticed from last one year.As it can be noted that all those apps available for 2.0.1 are in very early stages and are quite buggy this time.I hope this gets resolved in due course of time...
